Motorola Droid becomes the Milestone for Europe!

Ok, so we can see why they chose the name, after all, this is the phone that could make or break the US manufacturer. But still, Milestone!?! Our friends across the pond get the awesome sounding ‘Droid’ and we get Milestone? Clearly Motorola isn’t feeling particularly loved on this side of the Atlantic. Right, rant over. For those of you with a finger on the tech pulse, you’ll no doubt be aware that Motorola announced the Motorola Droid stateside late last week. For those who missed it, the Droid is set to be the second phone from Motorola to run Android OS and the first phone to ship with the new v2.0 Android (or Eclair if you like) OS. No word on whether the phone will feature MotoBlur, Motorola’s new UI that aggregates social networking sites and contacts into one app on your home screen. Incredibly well received with expectations incredibly high, Motorola have now confirmed that they will be bringing the Droid to Europe, albeit as the Milestone. What can we expect from Moto’s latest foray into Android?

Well, the Milestone features an impressive 3.7 inch capacitive touchscreen display supporting multi-touch (yay!) and with an impressive resolution of 480 x 854 pixels. Better still, the Milestone earns its place in the history books as the slimmest phone with a slide out QWERTY keyboard. That’s right, in addition to the impressive capacitive touchscreen, the Milestone slides up when held horizontally (ala’ the N97/ Mini) to reveal a full keyboard. The first phone to ship running Android 2.0, the Milestone unfortunately looses the voice guided Google Maps Navigation software that American Droid owners will be enjoying come launch. A shame but everything else is pure Android with Motorola claiming the Milestone will have around 10,000 apps available. A bold claim indeed. The Milestone also sports an ARM Cortex 550 MHz processor putting it in a similar league to the iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre which should ensure the phone multi-tasks with ease and opens and runs apps with impressive speed.

Elsewhere, the Milestone features everything you’d expect in a high end smartphone. HSDPA and Wi-Fi are ready to take the Milestone online with the former reaching an impressive 10.2 Mbps whilst on board GPS should handle your navigation needs. On board memory is still TBC but the phone does feature a MicroSD memory card supporting expansion up to 32GB. The Milestone also includes a 5.0 Megapixel camera with autofocus and a dual LED flash as well as high resolution video capture in D1 720 x 480 pixel resolution at 24 frames per second. Rounding off the features we find a 3.5 mm audio jack, MP3 music player, Bluetooth v2.1 with support for music streaming and a micro USB port.

Whether it’s the Droid or the Milestone, Motorola definitely seem to be getting back on form after several years in the wilderness. No sign of a UK release date yet but keep an eye on the blog for more information as we get it and click here to register for updates on the Motorola Milestone.
