Well, after the news that Nokia plans to scale back on it’s S40 handsets in order to focus on Maemo and Symbian, a new Nokia handset rumour has just hit the web. This is supposedly the Nokia N87, the successor to the popular N86 8MP. What’s so special about the N87? Well, read on to find out.

The N87 is rumoured to be Nokia’s entry into the 12 megapixel showdown, joining the likes of the Sony Ericsson Satio and the Samsung Pixon12. The N87 is said to include a 12.1 megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss Optics lens and will include a Xenon flash and a Dual-LED flash. Could this be the end of the weakly lit shots from cameraphones? Who knows, but if true, the N87 will surely have enough lighting power to compete with even the best stand-alone cameras.

In terms of other specs, we’re a little light but rumour has it the N87 will be a dual-slider with a 600 mhz processor and a 3.2 inch capacitive (yes you read that right, capacitive) touchscreen which would suggest that the finns have finally given in completely to capacitive technology; hopefully we’ll see a lot more of them on the horizon (capacitive Nokia N900 anyone?)

There’s no word on expected release date, but if the finns decide to stick to tradition, then expect to see the N87 debut at Mobile World Congress in February. Keep an eye on the blog for more details. Images courtesy of Daily Mobile.
